Heart of Torbay CIC
Recognising a gap in mainstream mental health and wellbeing support, Sharon founded Heart of Torbay in 2016 initially as a high street gift shop which provided a welcoming, inclusive and opportunistic space for local traders, service providers, and those seeking support for mental wellbeing. It very quickly extended with a tea room, therapy and workshop space.
After two years, Sharon sold the lease on the property and transitioned Heart of Torbay into the Community Interest Company it is today: A CIC with mental health and wellbeing at its heart. It provides coaching, mentoring, training, talks, workshops, mediation, alternative therapies and social prescribing activities. As a business, the belief is that everyone has a right to inclusion, to receive support and opportunities without financial barriers. The services we offer are concessionary or free dependant on level of income and we work alongside wonderful organisations and businesses across Torbay which also have the heart and financial opportunity to offer the same.
Our mission is to help Torbay thrive, engage and empower. We are at our most passionate when we are working to alleviate unfairness, whether that’s through someone not receiving the appropriate level of welfare within a work situation or helping someone to communicate better. It’s through that work we designed a unique and person-centred support program for those suffering from cluttering and hoarding disorder – Tidy Home Tidy Mind. We again recognised that there was a huge gap in mental health services locally. A lot of focus was put on ‘one’ front door but that particular front door relied on people knowing it existed, assumed that people had the motivation and mental wellbeing to pick up the phone and call or indeed had the resources to do so. The ‘front door’ we decided to create was that of individual’s homes – the real front door. See Tidy Home Tidy Mind for more information.
